Early Pregnancy Loss - Introduction
Introduction Ectopic Pregnancy - Description Ectopic Pregnancy - Diagnosis & Treatment Molar Pregnancy - Symptoms & Diagnosis The Dilation & Curettage Procedure
When Obstetricians use the term ‘early pregnancy loss’ they are usually referring to the loss of the foetus prior to 20 weeks after the date of conception. |
There
are several ways in which a pregnancy can fail to carry beyond twenty weeks.
Often, the loss is caused by a miscarriage (sometimes called
‘spontaneous abortion’ by doctors). There
may be an ectopic
pregnancy, which is when the fertilised egg does not enter the
uterus. This is less common than miscarriage. Another (much more rare) form of
early pregnancy loss is molar pregnancy.
The
loss of a pregnancy, no matter how early it may occur, usually involves more
than just the loss of a foetus. For most couples, miscarriage also results in
very profound feelings of loss and grief.
This
article discusses some of the major causes, symptoms and consequences of early
pregnancy loss.
