The production of spermatozoa is continuous throughout a man's life, however each spermatozoon has a limited life-span. Within the male testicle they last about a month. Once in the uterine cavity, they have a life-span of 2 to 7 days (the average is between 2 & 4 days).
Structure of a spermatozoon
The tail is the element that allows movement. The neck is the engine that gives the power. The head (or core) contains the man's genetic information.
The acrosome is the membrane at the tip of the cell that is used to allow it to pass through the jelly-like membrane that coats the egg, hence performing a vital role in fertilisation. To see a great animated version of this process, see the article at http://www.stanford.edu/group/Urchin/acrosome.htm on the Stanford University web site... Careful now!!! this is with sea urchin sperm, but it is almost the same process (if anyone can tell me another location that animates the exact human process, then please tell me!).
