New Baby, New Father.

How to change a diaper (nappy) - Step 2

Step 2:  The disaster Zone

Lay your baby on the changing table.  Take a deep breath and hold it in before opening up the soiled diaper (Gagging or actually throwing up during this process is simply not an option).

Hold both feet in the air with one hand, then with the other, use the front of the diaper to wipe away the worst of the mess.  Lift the feet higher in the air so that you can fold over the diaper and close it up underneath him/her.  Use the attaching strips to seal up the package then drop it in the disposal bag.

When holding the feet in the air, keep a good grip.  Kicking feet that get free tend to attempt "Jackson Pollock" paintings of the whole area.

Exhale and taste the air again.  The worst is over.

At this point, if you have a little boy, then its a good idea to cover his penis with a soft cloth, otherwise his pee will go all over you when he uses this most opportune of moments to let his bladder loose.

At this point, a mention needs to be given to natural washable diapers compared to disposable diapers as featured in this article...  in fact the best way to do this is to include reader comments...

Reader's Comment:

"I was reading your article on how to change a diaper and was disappointed to see that you seem to have a disparaging attitude towards the use of more environmentally friendly nappies.

I appreciate that these are harder to use and to persevere with than disposable nappies, however I feel that those people who are prepared to try should be encouraged and congratulated for not filling huge holes in the earth with bits of plastic filled with human excrement.

Please note that the average child will have about 6,000 nappy changes during its nappy using life time. That is a whole lot of land fill.

We took delivery of our nappies the other day, they are cool! They are shaped just like a normal nappy but made from Terry cloth, they have fleece and terry pads inside and additional absorbent pads to put inside too for extra soaking power. There is then an outer cover that goes on to prevent leaks. It seems to be a great system."

Reader's Comment:

"Absolutely loved the site and was going to recommend it to my partner... until I saw the article about diapers! I was shocked! Disposables use finite resources, take up space in landfill and cost far more than terry nappies, even accounting for laundry costs. Before disposables were invented we managed just fine. If people choose to use disposables then that's fine, but let's encourage, rather than discourage, anyone who wants, and is able, to use terry diapers, as they are attempting to be slightly inconvenienced in order to ensure a better life long term for this generation of children!
