Rhesus Disease (Rh Disease)

What are the treatments for Rh Disease?

If a woman has already naturally created antibodies against Rh positive blood before pregnancy (this is now very unusual), then the baby has a chance of being affected.  This would normally only happen if she has been exposed to Rh positive

blood in some way, for example in an emergency blood transfusion.

If the mother has high levels of antibodies present in her blood, then the baby will be regularly monitored by using an ultrasound scanner.  The doctor will be looking for cardiac problems, fluids in the lungs or swollen liver, which are all symptoms of a foetus in distress due to low red blood cell counts.

Another action often taken is to regularly take an amniocentesis sample to check for the level of anaemia (high white blood cell count) in the baby's blood.

In mild cases, an early delivery is normally induced followed by a complete blood replacement from a suitable donor.

In more severe cases, an intrauterine foetal blood transfusion may be required  (a blood transfusion whilst still in the womb).
