The Father's Role In Pregnancy

1. Being Involved

2. Different Types of Dads

3. Time Spent with Your Baby

What Will It Feel Like To Be A Dad? This is no simple question and of course the answer from each individual father will differ somewhat. However, there are a few fairly predictable reactions, for example, after witnessing the birth most men will

declare, “That was the most amazing experience of my life." Alternatively, as with all parents at all times throughout history, you will melt the first time that you rock your tiny child in your arms.

The father's active participation in the birth process has done a lot to dissipate the old and deeply ingrained notions that the baby's upbringing belongs exclusively in the mother's domain, although there is still much work to do in this matter.

It is possible, and perfectly natural that doubts will arise in a man. He may fear that excessive attention from him doesn’t fit in with his mental picture of how a child should be brought up. This should not surprise anyone, especially considering the stereotypes and prejudices that have been so prevalent in human society for the last several thousand years.

These same fears of “going against the grain” can also cause mental torment for a man that wants to be as involved as possible with his baby, including taking on the tasks that have traditionally belonged to the mother. According to most experts in the field of child development, the baby, your partner and you will all benefit the most by ignoring tradition and getting involved as much as you can.

Super-Dads - The flip side of the coin is the recent tendency toward the "super-dad". There are some fathers that take long vacations from work to be with the new child. Others, because their employment situation allows it, will opt to work from home.

These lucky few still only represent a small percentage of the “Dad” population, but those that manage it can tell of many examples of the fantastic rewards that can be derived from such a decision. Occasionally in these cases, it is the mother that feels jealous that the father stays at home so much. This type of arrangement still hasn’t won a wide acceptance within our slow moving society and may not be suitable for everybody.
