The Father's Role In Pregnancy

1. Being Involved

2. Different Types of Dads

3. Time Spent with Your Baby

Taking An Active Role (You can do everything too!)

A very important thing to remember is that with the exception of the childbirth and breastfeeding, there isn’t anything done by the mother that cannot be done by the father. Even if you don't stay at home to take care of the baby, it is normal for

today’s dads to spend less time away from home after the birth of a baby. This is not only a great assistance for the mother but also a perfect opportunity for you and your baby to develop strong and durable bonds.

With some practice, you will be able to change the diapers and to bathe baby like a professional. The payback will thoroughly compensate the energy used in the learning process. Don't forget, if this is the first baby then you are both novices, so you can learn things together. If your partner breastfeeds, then you can still be involved in the feeding by giving a bottle of milk that she has previously taken with a breast-pump.

The ‘Working Late’ syndrome:
It is common that new parents have doubts about their capacity to provide sufficient financial security for their family. These doubts can arise from a genuine need to provide food to another mouth or they can be the result of difficult targets that you have set in trying to provide for your child the best you possibly can.

Some new parents begin to stay at work later each night to try to raise extra cash or boost their chances of promotion (do you really believe that your employers will be more inclined to chose you for promotion if you work 18 hours a day? They are more likely to keep you where you are because you are so productive and devoted to your work!). In spite of these admirable intentions the experts in bringing up children will all immediately tell you that there are no recently born babies that have a need for the best of materials things. What he/she truly needs is both of the parent’s attention.

Quality Time

If you truly need to be away from the house for most of the time then make sure that the moments that are shared with your family are memorable. There is no substitute for the quality of your time. Plan weekly excursions, especially with infants and older children. Make sure that they know that this is their special time and tell them how much you look forward to these moments.

If both of you are working, your partner will be hoping that you don't only share the tasks of the home but also the activities of taking care of baby. From time to time, you could stop work for one afternoon to voluntarily participate in the activities of the day-care centre. You cannot imagine the sense of pride that children feel when their dad comes to the nursery.

It’s down to you. It could be that in the beginning you need to dedicate some extra time to learn new jobs. You may need to get up during the night or you may lose a few nights of sleep. There are plenty of hoops to jump through, but the rewards are there to be taken. There is no substitute to observing your child’s early development with your own eyes, and there is no satisfaction greater than knowing that you have contributed and played an active part in it.
