Toxoplasmosis - page 2 of 3
Immunity levels In the UK and USA, only about 30% of people have already been exposed to the parasite and have developed immunity to it. In continental Europe, this figure |
rises to 65% (due mostly to the tendency in these countries to eat rare
or uncooked meats).
Risks to the baby and the effects
The chances of infection during pregnancy is thought to be about 0.2%. If infection occurs in a non-immune mother during pregnancy, the baby does not always become infected or suffer any consequences, however in about 35% of cases the child will be infected and can suffer serious brain and eye development problems. Even though most infected children will appear normal at birth, sight & hearing problems develop as well as learning difficulties.
A small percentage of infected babies will display problems immediately at birth. These cases are the most severe and usually result in either death or very serious mental & physical health problems.
NOTE: The risks of toxoplasmosis infection and subsequent damage to the baby are very low overall and should not be a cause of stress in expecting parents.
Screening/diagnosis
A simple blood test can provide an indication of immunity. In the USA and UK, testing for immunity is not a standard procedure offered to everyone.
In many European and South American countries a blood test is performed at the beginning of every pregnancy to ascertain whether the mother should alter her eating habits during pregnancy (avoiding raw/uncooked meats etc).
Unfortunately, if a positive test is found (immunity is present), a further round of testing is required to discover whether or not the infection is recent or from more that a year ago.
