Toxoplasmosis - page 1 of 3
What is it? Toxoplasmosis is a parasitic infection that has the potential to cause damage to an unborn baby if the mother gets it for the first time in her life during the course of her pregnancy. |
If the mother has previously been exposed to the parasite (at least 6 to 9 months before pregnancy), then she will probably have an immunity that will normally protect both her and the child.
Cause
The actual cause is a parasite called "Toxoplasma Gondii" which can be found in the excrement of cats, in undercooked meat that is infected as well as raw eggs and unprocessed milks. Insects and other creatures that have been in contact with cat wastes in the garden can also carry the parasite.
The symptoms of infection
Many people (men & women) have previously been infected by the parasite and built up an immunity to it without even realizing that they have been ill. If any symptoms do occur, then it is usually in the form of 'flu-like' effects or tender glands in the neck. This is one of the most common parasitic infections in the World.
