Your Questions Answered...
Q
I have a question regarding the
effect of drugs/medication during pregnancy: Some illnesses, not related
to 'Pregnancy', may occur during pregnancy- such as a Cold, Severe Fever,
Indigestion and pain relating to that, food-poisoning and many other diseases.
Can drugs for the remedy of the aforesaid diseases be used during pregnancy? Can
these medicines be harmful for the baby? I will appreciate, if you could
be specific to say what type of medicines should be used and what to avoid in
some common ailments as stated earlier and such others, if occurs during
pregnancy.
A
Because drugs are taken ‘generally’ and not ‘locally’, they enter the
bloodstream so that the blood can carry the drug to the affected area of the
body. If any drug is taken during a pregnancy, then the drug within the blood
will also be shared with the baby. It is for this reason that you should
always check with your medical practitioner before taking any drugs during a
pregnancy. It is not possible to generalise about which ‘types’ of medicine are
‘safe’ as each individual has their own medical history which can indicate that
something could be safe for her, but be harmful to another with a different
health circumstance. Your doctor has all of the required information at
hand to provide the best advice.
