Cri-Du-Chat Syndrome
Neural Tube and Ventral Wall Defects Cri Du Chat Syndrome
Cri Du Chat Syndrome is caused by a deletion of part of chromosome 5. The name is derived from the distinctive sound made when children with this problem are crying ('Cri du Chat' means 'Cat's Cry' when translated from French). This anomaly is very rare and occurs about 1 in 50,000 live births.
People with this syndrome tend to share distinctive facial features, have a shortened lifespan and suffer varying levels of mental retardation.
