Trisomy 13, Patau Syndrome Neural Tube and Ventral Wall Defects
Trisomy 13 (Patau Syndrome) is a genetic disorder that occurs when an extra copy of the chromosome is present in the 13th chromosomal pairing.
About 1 in 8000 embryos are Trisomy 13.
Very severe mental retardation usually occurs. Trisomy 13 babies tend to be small at birth. In most cases a cleft lip/palate is present and the ears are low set and deformed. Interrupted breathing occurs frequently. Heart defects are common.
